The papers were given to Miss A. Hadfield by her cousin, Miss Helen Hadfield, sometime before 1933. In 1933, Miss A. Hadfield got in contact with Dr. G.R. Lomer of McGill Univeristy and sent the documents to him.

Content summary

Consisting of documents detailing the 1785 travels and observations of Joseph Hadfield through the Northwest fur trade of North America and to Niagara Falls (probably written after 1810). Observations are primarily economic in nature; however, there are also references to the geographical and cultural surroundings.

Born in Bonchurch, Isle of Wight, Hadfield moved to America while in his youth. He was, for a while, a cotton merchant. He was a personal friend of James McGill and documented the commercial fur trade in Canada in the late 18th century.
